quilting time

29 May 2011

Shirley Mae had such fun quilting her grandson's quilt, I thought I should have a go at Ellie too!

Four hours after loading the machine, I heard a big YEEHAW! I knew the deed was done.

By 4:30 I had this beauty loaded and ready to go! I just couldn't leave it alone, so after supper I had to come back and finish it!

Here we are five hours later. This was such fun! Kinda scarey self portrait though, what can I say, that was 11pm.

The taming of the Beast

09 Jan 2011

Ever have one of those nights, when all you can do is think? If you could just turn off your bain, you would fall asleep....

That crazy longarm machine did it to me the other night. Humm....Needless to say, I was ready to tackle the 'beast'.

These things I have learned.

It doesn't take 4 hours to load a quilt. Well, maybe only once, and that was early in the day for me. I had to read the words. You know how I hate to read the words. Right? I can read pictures with no problem, but the words, that's just boring. After 4 hours I realized that it was loaded WRONG and had to take it off the machine. Second attempt only took 15 minutes. Good thing its only a wall hanging.

I quilted these two beauties at the same time. I even managed to put the purple backing on the purple quilt and the blue backing on the blue quilt. Small wonders never cease. Note to self, make sure the pantograph pattern is completely under the grid on the table.

Happy quilting! Wendy

Where have I been?

10 Dec 2010

WOO! These last few weeks have been a rush! My neice Amy and I went out East in September. We managed to find one fabric store. We didn't have a lot of time to look. Only one week! New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia....you get the idea, right?

 Suttles and Seawinds

Oh yes! Then there is the Beast.... we have added a longarm quilting machine to our store. What was I thinking? I'm a visual person. So when I'm told it's 14 feet long, get ready, I really can't picture it. Yes, I have a measuring tape. It just didn't register....that I really should be... removing a wall. Yep! This just will not do...So the wall came down with the help of a small chain saw and Joan's hubby. Now I just have to move the Beast into it's permanent home. It's amazing how much time you waste walking wall parts to the dumpster when you don't have a helper.

After I tame the Beast, we will be giving lessons on how to use it, then renting it out. I'm aiming for the end of January, or February. It depends on the attitude of the Beast and myself.

Cheers, Wendy

October, again!

17 Oct 2010

It's October, again! What a change from last October. Yesterday there was a plaque dedication for Ted at the Isaac Lake boat launch. Beautiful day. What can I say, thank you to the Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen's Club and the Rankin Resource Committee for making this wonderful tribute happen.  If you're in the area, check it out. The big guy in the picture is my son. When did he get so tall?

 Ted's plaque

Why is it that sometimes life feels like a speedway, zoom! A friend reminded me the other day, that we don't have to be everything, for everybody. I think that's a female trait. Don't you?

The store is bursting with fabric...and confusion. I was trying to move my office to my house, so I could knock out a wall...another one. Thanks to calmer heads, that will not be happening. It proved to be major renovations....no thank you. There will be big changes by the new year. Wait and see!

Nancy H Good TidingsNancy Halverson is my new favourite, for now.....This panel arrived instore, and went out just as fast. Don't dispair, I've re-ordered! We have ALL the accompanying fabric, Art to Heart books and her Garden Song panel. The beauty of Nancy's work is all her fabric lines blend together. I'm thinking Crazy Cats would be lovely with this fabric line!

Schodinger

Of course there would be a new cat in the house. Oliver never found his way home. I'm hoping that her returned to his other mother. This is Cameron's cat Schrodinger. He rarely stays still, so pictures are scarce. He's grabbing the string on the camera in this picture.

Tara and her friend came for Thanksgiving Sunday, with her little dog Gizmo....Schrodinger was in seventh heaven! Someone to play with...and the best part, he came with TOYS. Unfortunately, he left with one less toy, because Schrodinger hid it. Now every once and a while, a cat and stuffed fish go barreling through the room. Tuesday will be a shock for the little furball, he will become a suprano! HeeHee. Maybe that will slow him down...

I have classes posted up until the end of November for those of you interested. I'm sure that would be everyone, right?

Does anyone remember when Mom made Poor Man's pudding? Here's my family's version...Ted's favourite comfort food.

1/2 cup milk                      1/2 cup brown sugar

1 cup raisins                       1 cup flour

1 tsp baking powder            1 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt                        1 tsp vanilla

Mix together and place in a greased casoral dish.

Sauce: 1 cup brown sugar      1 tblsp butter

           2 cups boiling water

Pour these ingredients over the cake batter. It will look yucky, but don't worry about it. Bake for 1/2 hour, or so, in 350 degree F oven. The cake will rise to the top, and the sauce will be waiting for you underneath. I don't know how this happens, it just does. It's magic!

Lost - One orange cat

29 Jun 2010

LOST - ONE ORANGE CAT.....

didn't I say to keep the door shut!

Oliver on couch

Well, he made it through Friday night. 30 people in and out....Oliver stayed in the house. Shut the door! Don't let the cat out!

However, Saturday night I went to bed early. I didn't stay up to say - Shut the door! Don't let the cat out! Good Grief! This is not rocket science people! Come on!

You guessed it, Sunday morning, Oliver is gone....then I'm told 'Grandma, I'm pretty sure I heard the fox last night. You said it sounds like a puppy with a sore throat.' Thanks Cassie. So here it is Tuesday 5am and Oliver is still not here. Well, NUTS!

It's not so bad that I've got $300.00 invested in the little hairball. But darn it all, he has got me through some pretty dark days. We've checked the bush. We've checked the roadside ditches. Maybe he just chased the fish flies....and can't find his way home....I miss him. Cameron misses him...I want my cat back!

So here we go.....LOST, ONE ORANGE TOM CAT. Sometimes will look at you, when you call OLIVER. Nine months old....hyper. Likes to shread curtains and bounce into windows. Great at catching mosquitoes and flies. Loves to tackle older cats (Patches is looking very smug these days. She knows something) and swing from skirts. Plays tag with your feet, while flying downstairs. Loves treats........humm....

 crazy quilt give away

Opening of Bass was on Saturday. If you knew Ted, he loved bass season, and managed to fish a few of the pro bass tournaments over the years. So, Friday we had a little memorial for Ted out at the Rankin Boat launch. It's amazing. You call people, and they come! Bless you! This was also the first time in ages that I have all of my nieces together at the same time. So there goes 4 more crazy quilts! They seemed happy, and recognized quite a few of their grandmother's fabrics. The last two are for Dawn and Cameron (my kids). Tara received hers at Easter.
